Bone Broth

Why would anyone do this? That sounds disgusting! Well where do you think chicken and beef stock from from? There are so many reasons, but to be brief, bone broth gives us back so many nutrients that we can’t get through a typical North American Diet these days. Bone broth is loaded with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Ever see some joint supplement touting how great Glucosamine is for you? Well, why take a synthetic or supplemental version when your can easily add this broth to your tea, soup or cook your veggies/meat in it for extra flavor without wasting what you’ve already bought at the store? Remember being a kid and having a cold or the flu and mama giving you chicken broth? Well there was a reason, listen to mama! More importantly bone broth has a great amount of nutrients (Vitamin A, Vitamin D etc). Just remember, real food before supplementation! On more of a vanity note, bone broth makes your hair, nails and skin sexy! Yeah, I said it.

Deciding to keep it simple for my first go, I used with this Bone Broth Recipe from one of my favorite Paleo sites: NomNomPaleo

Ingredients:
-Slow Cooker – Mine is small so I adjusted the amount of ingredients
-Bones! You can mix and match. Beef, Chicken, Pig, Deer, Bison, the sky is the limit. Get in good with your butcher and you can get them for super cheap! I found Smoked Pork Knuckles today, so that’s what I went with.
-2 carrots, chopped medium
-2 celery stalks, chopped medium
-1 medium onion, chopped medium
-7 garlic cloves, smashed
-2 bay leaves
-Kosher salt
-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
-Water

Next step… Chop the Veggies, put in the cooker and the bones on top. Add bay leaves, salt and fill with water until all is covered.

Finally, set on low for 8-10 hours.

Once you’re done with the crockpot, ladle out all of the big stuff.

Then place a piece of cheesecloth into a strainer to get the smaller pieces

What you have left is a beautiful broth ready for soups, meat, veggies or to even drink straight. I tried mine straight away and it is delicious

This broth will set to a gelatin like state when its cool, just take as much as you need and heat it up for soups, meat, veggies or even drink straight. I tried mine and it is delicious. Remember you can freeze the broth for several months, or keep it in the fridge for a few days. I only used three knuckles (small crockpot) and made plenty!

 

This was a simple recipe, and I’m excited to keep moving forward improving my health and enjoying my food!
